28 Plays Later: Challenge 8 (This Is For My Girls)

Todays challenge was to write a piece of theatre about one of our favirote songs, I chose, ‘Can’t Hold Us Down’ by Christina Aguilera ft. Lil’ Kim because it was an anthem for the teenage me and because Aguilera is my Queen.

This Is For My Girls.

(Verbatim Theatre based on,

‘Can’t Hold Us Down’ by Christina Aguilera ft. Lil’ Kim)

Crowd

Scene 1.

There is a podium on the stage with a microphone, two large screens stand either side of it and one above. On the screens, we see ‘live’ footage of the crowd gathered to hear the speaker. We are at a woman’s rally, a slut walk. On the screen, we see woman in droves in underwear with placards and banners, saying things like, ‘SLUT PRIDE’, ‘WOMANPOWER’, ‘DON’T TELL ME HOW TO DRESS, TELL THEM NOT TO RAPE’, ‘SLUTS LOVE CONSENT’. Some women have slogans written on their bare stomachs, ‘STILL NOT ASKING FOR IT’, ‘MY BODY MY CHOICE’

MARIA walks onto the stage, the crowd go crazy. She is dressed in lingerie, she is beautiful and looks incredibly sexy, THAT IS THE POINT, across her stomach reads. ‘MY BODY MY CHOICE’. She stands on the podium, the two screens either side of her now show her face. She smiles and waves at everyone, the crowd still going crazy, she stands there, strong like a warrior for a moment soaking in the energy, she raises a hand and the crowd quieten.

Maria:

This is for my girls all around the world who’ve come across a man who don’t respect your worth.

The crowd erupts again, Maria continues.

Maria:

So, what am I not supposed to have an opinion? Should I be quiet just because I’m a woman? Call me a bitch cos I speak what’s on my mind, guess it’s easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled. When a female fires back suddenly big talker don’t know how to act. So, he does what any little boy would do, making up a few false rumours or two. That for sure is not a man to me! Slanderin’ names for popularity? It’s sad you only get your fame through controversy but now it’s time for me to come and give you more to say!

The crowd are cheering loudly. Maria stands quietly, nodding.

Maria:

So, what? Am I not supposed to say what I’m saying? Are you offended by the message I’m bringing? Call me whatever cos your words don’t mean a thing! If you look back in history, it’s a common double standard of society, the guy gets all the glory the more he can score. While the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore! I don’t understand why it’s okay the guy can get away with it and the girl gets named!  Here’s something I just can’t understand. If the guy have three girls then he’s the man, if the girl do the same, then she’s a whore! The table’s about to turn, I’ll bet my fame on it! This is for my girls all around the world, who’ve come across a man who don’t respect your worth thinking all women should be seen, not heard. So, what do we do girls? Shout out loud!
Crowd:

(Chanting) SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Maria:

Letting them know we’re gonna stand our ground! Lift your hands high and wave ’em proud! Take a deep breath and say it loud! Never can, never will, can’t hold us down!

Crowd:

CAN’T HOLD US DOWN!

Maria:

What do we do girls?
Crowd:

(Chanting) SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Maria:

WHAT DO WE DO GIRLS?
Crowd:

(Chanting) SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Maris:

Spread the word!

Can’t hold us down!

Crowd:

(The crowd cheer wildly and chant)

CAN’T HOLD US DOWN!

CAN’T HOLD US DOWN!

CAN’T HOLD US DOWN!

END.

  1. I’ve always been interested in playwriting and screenwriting. I’ve never worked in that medium before and have generally stuck to writing short stories. If you ever have time and the desire to do so, I would love an article on proper playwriting format and things of that nature.
