28 Plays Later: Challenge 21 (The Gift)

Today our challenge was to write a sci-fi piece, life meant I did not have time to write a grand epic love letter to one the genres I love so much, so I went for simplicity instead.

The Gift.

Father

Gabriel

Father is in his death bed, saying goodbye to his daughter, Gabriel.

Father:

Sweetheart, I know this is difficult for you, you feel like you are going to be alone and that the world is a hollow place. I promise you will get through this and I will always be with you. I have a gift for you but it is to be used with caution.

Gabriel:

I just don’t think I can do this without you

Father:

Yes, you can, you have no choice and you cannot simply cease to be because it is my time. But listen, I have a gift for you, you have to promise me you will be careful.

Gabriel:

I promise dad.

Father:

I give to you this (he hands her a watch)

Gabriel:

It’s beautiful but I don’t understand why I would have to have caution with a watch.

Father:

It’s not a watch, it’s the gift of time

Gabriel:

I love you dad but I think the meds are making you a bit cheesy

Father:

You misunderstand me, that watch can take you forward and backwards in time, anywhere you want to go.

Gabriel:

I’m going to get the nurse

Father:

Sweetheart, I’m not delusional. (he closes his eyes)

Gabriel:

The watch is a time machine? Really, dad come on.

Her father walks in the room, smiles and walks back out

Gabriel:

What the hell?

Father:

Am I gone?

Gabriel:

I don’t understand.

Father:

Listen to me. When I was, younger I hated my life, I thought everything was unfair and I wanted to run away. I invented this watch so I could run anywhere in time and start again. First, I went to the future to see what it was like but I found the same problems, people where selfish and self-absorbed and I couldn’t take it, everyone was so obsessed with themselves, so I went back in time. I found like to be dull and cruel and the people to me seemed narrow minded and stupid. I travelled a lot and everywhere I went I found the same truths that caused my problem. I realised, my problems travelled with me because I travelled with me. You cannot hope to be free in this world if you are your own jailer, if you are looking at the world as if it owes you a service. So, I went back to great men and women’s beginnings, then I went to see the tyrants of the world. The only difference was fear. If one looks fear in the eye, you may move through it. If you let fear be your guide it moves through you. I give you the gift of time so you may travel with your problems as I did and you may overcome them. You are looking at life right now as if it is unjust but all that is born will die, that is natures bargain for existence. I have lived my life with all the fullness I could, I am grateful to have been and I am ready to settle my bill. You have your whole life ahead of you and if you use my gift, you may see for yourself what I mean. You cannot outrun pain, it is quicker than you, you cannot outrun yourself, you are always by your side and you cannot outrun nature, she is in all things and places waiting for you. I am giving you this watch and it comes with a choice, both options include fear, you choose how to handle it. Please remember, you have the gift of time now but you cannot get to the end of anything without first travelling, the end result is simply a place until you have walked the lessons that lead you there.

Gabriel:

I love you daddy, with this gift I never have to be without you!

Father:

You have to let me go and I know you will realise that one day.

Gabriel:

I can’t

Father:

You will and its ok.

Gabriel:

How do you know?

Father:

Because this is the last time I will have this conversation, for you it is the first.
